Update your home with modern lighting. Install recessed lighting to create a cleaner look with a better lit room for your living area.

Recessed light fixtures are flush with the ceiling, making them great for rooms with low ceilings. Sometimes called can lights or downlights, these fixtures have three main components that can define the type of recessed light — housing, trim style and bulb or lamp type.

There can be multiple uses for recessed lighting:

  • Wash the wall, not the floor, with light.
Recessed lighting comes in various configurations. A wall washer is a fixture that is typically placed 18 to 24 inches from the wall (depending on your ceiling height) and used in a series to spread light on a large surface. When light is bounced off a vertical surface into a room, it creates a great sense of illumination: You notice the wall rather than the fixture itself.
  • Spotlight art and objects.
Instead of blanketing a space with an even grid of lighting, introduce a spotlight (or a few) to orient the eye. Unlike wall washers, spotlights, with their narrow beams, draw your attention to a specific moment within a room. For example, installing spotlights in a bathroom over a porcelain sink and bathtub makes the fixtures sparkle and pop.

Tips for the best use and spacing of your fixtures:

  • Avoid recessed lighting fixtures placed too close together or in rows down the center of the room. This type of installation can have the look of an airport runway.
  • Match the size of your recessed lighting fixtures to how close together they can be installed. The common rule is that 4-inch fixtures should generally be placed at least 4 feet apart and 6-inch fixtures about 6 feet apart.
  • Center recessed lighting fixtures in front of the objects you wish to light—a painting, bookshelf, or drapery panels, for example—and about 12 to 18 inches in front of that object.
  • Recessed lights used for reading or task lighting should be carefully placed overhead so your head and shoulders will not block needed light.
